SOLO COMPETITION

The North & South Carolina Division is hosting a Music & Creative Arts Solo Competition! This competition will be open to anyone who attends a Salvation Army in North or South Carolina and will take place in March at Camp Walter Johnson during the Divisional School of Arts weekend. There will be six categories and three different levels per a category. The solo categories are Acting, Brass, Dance, Percussion, Piano, and Vocal. Registration for the competition will open in January. Below you can find solo information for each area.

ACTING COMPETITION

The acting solo competition is broken into 3 levels. Levels 1 & 2 have one required test piece. Level 3 has a required test piece and one free choice piece. You can find the information on the levels and test pieces below.

DANCE COMPETITION

The dance solo competition is broken into 3 levels. Levels 1 & 2 have set choreography to learn. you can find the tutorials below. Level 3 dancers will choreograph their own solo to one of the 10 music options provided. You can find the playlists, as well as the required choreographic elements below.

Dancers for Level 3 will select their own piece of music from the playlist. They will choreograph their own routine, and must include these three choreographic elements:

  • A turn (Chaîné, Pirouette, etc)
  • A jump (Jeté, Assemblé, etc)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Any member of a Salvation Army church in North or South Carolina. Participants must have Corps Officer endorsement and participants must be at least 11 years old and no older than 23 years old by March 20th.
 

HOW DO I CHOOSE WHAT LEVEL?
The levels are divided by ability and age. If you are over the age of 17, you can only participate in level III. If you are 11 years old, you may choose whichever level best fits your ability. The levels are split this way to help even the playing field for all soloists.
 

HOW DO I CHOOSE A PIECE FOR THE COMPETITION?
For those in Level I & II, you will only perform the assigned piece Test Piece listed above. For those in Level III, you will perform the assigned Test Piece and a piece of your choosing. You may choose any piece that best fits your ability and is no longer than 8 minutes. You may use a digital recording of an accompaniment for your choice piece if you bring a device to play the accompaniment.
 

WHAT IS THE ENTRY FEE?
There is NO entry fee to participate. The competition is free, and all delegates who regularly attend DSA are strongly encouraged to participate.
 

HOW WILL THE WINNER BE DECIDED?
There will be two adjudicators for each category with a rubric to score and grade soloists. The soloist with the highest average score from both adjudicators will be the winner.
 

WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?
There is a cash prize for the winning soloist of each level of each category. There also camp scholarships given to the corps with the highest overall score (1 CMAC & 2 CYMI Scholarships), the second highest overall score (2 CYMI Scholarships), and the most participation (3 CYMI Scholarships).
