WHAT IS DIVISIONAL SCHOOL OF ARTS?

Divisional School of Arts (DSA) is a music & arts learning program held at Camp Walter Johnson. We meet once a month between September and May (excluding December). The program offers classes in Brass Band, Acting, Dance, Guitar, Percussion, Timbrels, and Visual Arts. Delegates must be approved by their local corps officers and the Divisional Music & Arts team.

DSA CLASSES & AUDITIONS

We offer various different classes at DSA. Delegates will pick one major class for the season from the options below. All delegates will be involved in a chorus and must also prepare a chorus audition.

Registration for the 2026-27 DSA Season closes September 1, 2026.
Auditions will take place on September 11th. 

Below you will find an overview of each class. Click on the class you are interested in to find audition information. 

There are four choruses at DSA: Girls Chorus, Boys Chorus, Intermediate Chorus, and the Divisional Youth Chorus (DYC).

All delegates must audition for a chorus. You can find the audition music below.

In the acting class you will learn skills like projection, stage direction, characterization, script analysis, improv, and more. Whether you're an experience actor who dreams of a professional future, or someone wanting to build confidence and try something new, this is the class for you! 

Those delegates registering for the acting class do not need to audition

If you are interested in auditioning for Lights Up! you will need to audition. The application can be found below. 

 

There are four brass bands at DSA: The Beginner Brass Band, Intermediate Brass Band, Carolinas Divisional Youth Band (CDYB), and The Carolinas Divisional Band (CDB). More information on the CDB can be found here. For more information on any of the bands, please reach out to Aaron Jackson.

Except for new beginners, all brass delegates will need to audition to be placed in the Intermediate Band or the Carolinas Youth Band.

One of the most popular classes at DSA! In this class you will learn dance fundamentals and technique, as well as choreography and combinations you can take back to the corps. 

Our dance room is small and therefore can only hold 12 delegates. If the class is full when you register, your name will be placed on the waiting list and we will reach out for your second choice for major classes. 

Those delegates registering for the dance class do not need to audition

The Guitar Major at DSA is for all levels of guitarists. From beginners interested in learning how to play, to more advanced players wanting to increase their abilities. Students will learn chords and how to read music and play melodies. At the end of DSA, guitarist will be able to participate in a worship team and help teach at the corps.

Except for new beginners, all guitar delegates will need to audition to help with placement in guitar class.

The Percussion Class at DSA is for beginner and developing percussionists who are not ready for a band yet. In the percussion class, students work on snare fundamentals using drum line equipment.

Those in the beginner percussion class do not need to audition. If you wish to audition for a band, use the audition material below:

The Piano major at DSA is for all levels of pianists, from beginners just starting to learn piano, to more advanced players wanting to increase their talents. In the piano major, you will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of piano playing from chords and melodies to hymn playing to classical piano. Piano students will each have their own keyboard to practice through the weekend. At the end of DSA, pianist will be able to participate in worship with either a solo, play in a worship team, or playing hymns at the corps

The piano class is limited to twelve instruments. Each year, we accept six beginners and six returners. Be sure to apply fast!

Piano students DO NOT need to audition for piano. However you WILL need to complete a chorus audition

 

The Divisional Timbrel Brigade meets at DSA as a combined youth and adult ensemble. Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to join. 

 

Our Visual Arts class looks at fusing worship and your craft together. Each month they use different mediums to create unique pieces of work. Anyone interested in participating in the Visual Arts class is encouraged to bring 1-2 pieces of original work to show their instructor. Be prepared to answer some questions about what your experience with art. Your instructor may want to know what mediums you like to use, your experience, and/or your understanding of the elements of art (color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value).
