Unexpectedly Dustin’s landlord passed away, and her family inherited the home. They gave Dustin and his family 30 days to vacate. With nowhere to turn, Dustin went to the VA for help to find housing for him and his family. The VA recommended The Salvation Army. “When I came to The Salvation Army, the staff was very welcoming,” Dustin said.
“They Gave Us A Book That Explained The Program And The Steps To Take To Get Better And Gave Us A Place To Stay.”
With a safe place to stay, and no longer fearing the prospect of becoming homeless, Dustin began to get back on his feet. He enrolled in classes to help him become a better husband and father. Lessons on parenting, emotional care for veterans, including equine therapy for PTSD, and budgeting classes. “They taught me about finances,” Dustin shared. “I was never good with finances; I was living paycheck to paycheck.”
Dustin credits the case worker’s help and the accountability she provided, for being able to pay off ten to fifteen thousand dollars of debt in one year and said,
“Now I Am Able To Save To Buy A Home Instead Of Renting.”
Dustin’s family was also able to enroll in classes and take field trips with The Salvation Army staff. “They took us to fairs, and movies, and different events,” Dustin gratefully expressed.
He went on to say folks should give to The Salvation Army because they help veterans like him, get on their feet, and help them have a better life. “My wife and I are much happier; we are even better parents to our children thanks to The Salvation Army,” Dustin proudly shared.
Dustin is quick to credit his success to the program’s holistic approach, caring for Veterans and their families, financially, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Thanks to ongoing support from neighbors in the Louisville area, Veterans like Dustin are being cared for through the work of The Salvation Army.
