Our After-School Program

JOSHUA'S CHALLENGE LITERACY PROGRAM

HELP KIDS SUCCEED

The Joshua’s Challenge Literacy Program is a proven approach that allow more students to read on grade level by the end of third grade. Our approach is based on a method which has seen great success at the Sheep-Harney Elementary School in Elizabeth City. It is also now being used at schools in at least six counties of North Carolina.

The Salvation Army, which is based in Rocky Mount and serves Nash, Edgecombe, and Wilson counties, has launched its own adapted version of this program to help bring up reading scores for selected third-grade readers at participating schools. We recently held a pilot program with Benvenue Elementary School in Nash County in the spring of 2022. Currently, we are also working with Coker-Wimberly Elementary School and Martin Millennium Academy in Edgecombe County and hope to soon expand the program to Rocky Mount Prep. We are hoping to eventually expand this program to more schools in Nash, Edgecombe, and Wilson counties as funding permits.

This year we have a roughly $90,000 budget to fund extra reading tutoring services for four schools in our community: two in Edgecombe County and two in Nash County. The Penny Barnhill Foundation has generously offered to provide up to $42,500 for this campaign if it matched by the community. We already have some donations, but we are working to gather $25,000 to complete the match! Please click on the link below to learn more about our campaign and the Joshua's Challenge Literacy Program. We even have a video documentary for you to watch courtesy of WHIG-TV! We would love to reach this goal by Nov. 15 before our Red Kettle season begins, so please help us now by donating here or through the link below.
