Meet Our New Athletic Director: Morris Jones

Jun 24, 2024

Tell us about your background and career.

I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio, where I actively participated in various sports activities throughout my upbringing. I earned my bachelor's degree in sports management with a minor in business from North Carolina Central University, where I also completed my masters in athletic administration. Since 2018, I have been engaged in the public school system, serving in roles such as teacher, athletic director, and coach. Working with children is a passion of mine, and I find great satisfaction in witnessing their growth and development.

What do you enjoy about leading athletic programs?

I find great joy in witnessing the progress of young athletes throughout the season. Watching them improve and develop a passion for the sport is incredibly rewarding. While not everyone will become a professional athlete, the camaraderie and memories built through sports last a lifetime.

What are you most looking forward to in your new position here at The Army?

I'm excited to merge my love for athletics with my faith to positively impact The Salvation Army's programs, reaching and benefiting more people. Additionally, I'm eager to volunteer in various areas of The Army to support those in need.

How do you think athletic programs help young people in their development?

Athletic programs provide a constructive outlet for young people, offering a break from daily routines and fostering mentorship opportunities. Coaches can serve as mentors and role models, crucial for youth development.

Were you an athlete yourself? If so, how did you benefit from your experience?

Yes, I played several sports growing up such as baseball, basketball, and football. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to play collegiate baseball. I formed lifelong friendships and several of my former teammates are now close friends who stood alongside me at my wedding, as my groomsmen. Sports taught me the value of hard work and instilled a drive to continually strive for improvement. Through dedication, I increased my scholarship at Mississippi Valley State University (where I began my collegiate career) and earned a scholarship at NCCU where I was a walk-on.

What do you like to do when not at work?

Outside of work, I love spending time with my wife and son. We have a very active toddler that enjoys the outdoors, and we will soon welcome our daughter to the world in November so I am looking forward to creating more memories with my growing family.

Any interesting fact you would like to share about yourself?

I had the honor of meeting my childhood hero, Ken Griffey Jr., which remains a cherished memory I often share with friends who played baseball and considered him as their childhood hero as well.
