Stuff the Bus: Help Students Start the School Year Strong
With back-to-school season quickly approaching, we are excited to partner with Walmart to help local students in need start the year prepared, confident, and ready to succeed. On Friday, August 1 we are hosting a Stuff the Bus school supply drive at the Walmart in Wake Forest, located at 2114 S. Main Street from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
We’ll be collecting school supplies of all kinds to help kids of all ages thrive in the classroom.
Why It Matters
For many families, back-to-school season is financially overwhelming. From backpacks to notebooks, the cost of supplies adds up quickly. Donations, whether a pack of pencils or a backpack full of essentials, can help ease that burden.
“The need for school supplies is significant and ongoing,” said Neshia Pearson, a licensed school social worker at Durant Road Elementary. “I work with students who come to school without even the most basic materials — no backpack, notebook, or writing essentials. Families are doing their best, but many are facing financial hardships where food and housing take priority. School supplies often come second.”
The Impact of a Simple Pencil
It’s not just about the materials. It’s about what they represent.
“When a student has their own supplies, they walk in with confidence, literally all smiles,” Neshia shared. “It gives them a sense of ownership and belonging. On the flip side, not having what they need can affect their focus, participation, and self-esteem. What seems small — a pencil, a binder, crayons — can have a big impact.”
In her role, Neshia connects families with resources ranging from food and housing support to school supplies. She’s stood on both sides of the supply line, receiving help as a child, and now giving it as a professional.
Supporting Teachers Too
Stuff the Bus doesn’t just benefit students. It also supports teachers who often dip into their own pockets to help students in need.
“Teachers are generous and creative when it comes to filling in the gaps,” Neshia said. “But when students arrive equipped with what they need, it takes that weight off of educators and lets them focus on teaching.”
Meet the Need — All Year Long
While school supply drives are often focused on back-to-school season, the need doesn’t end in August.
“Students transfer mid-year, backpacks are lost or left behind during moves, and family situations can change overnight,” Neshia noted. “The need is real all year long.”
