Every Volunteer Is A Blessing

Feb 4, 2026

At The Salvation Army, we are continually reminded how blessed we are to have so many volunteers in the Winston-Salem area to help us serve our community. This past Christmas season, we were blessed beyond measure by the incredible men and women who generously gave their time and hearts to serve others. Truly, our volunteers are priceless treasures.

During one of the busiest and most meaningful times of the year, volunteers stepped forward in countless ways. Dozens of volunteers faithfully rang bells and collected donations at 24 Red Kettle locations throughout the community, whether it was cold or rainy or sunny, spreading both cheer and hope. Others shopped for children through our Angel Tree program, carefully selecting gifts that brought joy to families who otherwise might have gone without. Teams of volunteers sorted and distributed Angel Tree gifts at the Angel Tree Warehouse, while others dedicated hours to organizing and handing out coats during our coat distribution days. Each act of service reflected compassion in action and love for our neighbors in need.

We are equally grateful for our regular volunteers who serve faithfully week after week. Their commitment strengthens the ongoing work at our Center of Hope Family Shelter, our Senior Center, the Red Shield Youth Center, and our Kernersville food pantry. Their steady presence provides encouragement, dignity, and practical assistance to individuals and families walking through difficult seasons. We are truly blessed by every person who chooses to serve — you are, indeed, priceless treasures.

As we look ahead, there are many meaningful opportunities for those who feel called to volunteer. Extra hands and willing hearts are always welcome:

  • Center of Hope Family Shelter: Assist with preparing or serving evening meals, organizing children’s activities, or sharing a brief devotional message with shelter residents.
  • Red Shield Youth Center: Support children in our weekday after-school programs through mentoring, homework help, tutoring, and encouragement.
  • Senior Center: Help facilitate activities, outings, and fellowship opportunities for seniors during the week.

If you are unsure where or how you might best serve our community through The Salvation Army, we invite you to explore our programs and ministries by visiting www.salvationarmyws.org. You may also contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Joni Hunter, at 336-245-2083 or joni.hunter@uss.salvationarmy.org with any questions or to discuss your interests. There are a few simple steps to becoming a volunteer, and our team would be honored to walk alongside you as you begin.

Every volunteer journey is unique — just like the individual God has created you to be. Whether you can give a few hours or many, your willingness to serve makes a lasting difference in the lives of others and strengthens the mission of The Salvation Army throughout our community.
