Mental Health Services Help Kids Thrive
For some children living in poverty, life is unbearably stressful — constant worry about their next meal, where they will sleep each night, violence in the home, and violence in the street, all on top of the everyday stressors of just being a kid in today’s world. These feelings make it hard to sleep, to focus at school, or to believe that tomorrow could be better. Too often, children carry these heavy burdens silently, without the tools or support they need to cope.
At The Salvation Army, we see these children every day at our Ken Carlson Red Shield Youth Center — kids who appear strong on the outside but are overwhelmed on the inside. Fear, anxiety, sadness, and anger can show up in many ways, from trouble concentrating to sudden outbursts or complete withdrawal. Without help, these struggles can follow a child well into adulthood.
That is why The Salvation Army offers mental health services for the most fragile among us. Through professional counseling, children are given a safe place to talk, play, and begin healing. Licensed professionals and trained caregivers meet each child where they are, helping them understand their feelings and develop healthy ways to manage stress and emotions.
Sometimes healing begins with something simple — a trusted adult who listens, a quiet room where a child feels safe, or a chance to express feelings through art or play. Over time, these moments build resilience. Children learn that their feelings matter, that what they’ve experienced doesn’t define their future, and that hope is possible even in the midst of hardship.
Mental health care at The Salvation Army is provided regardless of a family’s ability to pay, ensuring that no child is turned away because of poverty. This compassionate support often works alongside other vital services, such as food assistance, housing support, and educational programs, helping stabilize the entire family and create a foundation for lasting change.
Every child deserves the chance to grow, dream, and thrive. By addressing mental health alongside physical and emotional needs, The Salvation Army is helping children move from surviving to truly living — one conversation, one breakthrough, and one hopeful step at a time.
