Savannah’s homeless shelters work to keep COVID-19 at bay

At the Salvation Army's shelter, 3100 Montgomery St., Linda James, director of the Center of Hope there, said Friday the shelter has a capacity of 116 beds with 40 for the transient population. Twenty-seven beds were open there on Friday, March 13

There a transient homeless person can stay for up to 90 days with an assessment within the first 48 hours and a case plan for each individual, she said.

At Old Savannah City Mission shelter, 2414 Bull St., Connell Stiles, director of development, said Friday the shelter has the capacity of 93 beds with 40 open to the transient homeless population.

"We still have space," Stiles said, adding that individuals in those beds can stay for seven days, then must be out for 30 before returning.
