Background of The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army began in 1865 when William Booth, a London minister, abandoned the conventional concept of a church and a pulpit, instead taking his message to the people where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute. He set up a tent in a Quaker graveyard, and his services became an instant success.  His renown as a religious leader spread throughout London, and he attracted followers who were dedicated to fight for the souls of men and women.

The mission grew slowly, so William and his wife Catherine expanded their services within the community. They advocated that their mission should be “Soup, Soap, and Salvation,” then took their mission directly to the streets, helping to feed the hungry, rehabilitate alcoholics and fight teenage prostitution – all while offering spiritual guidance. His aim was to lead people to Christ and link them to a church for further spiritual guidance, but soon realized that the poor were not welcome in the pews of most churches and chapels of Victorian England. Booth decided to found a church especially for them. Since then, The Salvation Army has been activated in virtually every corner of the world and has evolved over the decades into a social service provider with an unmatched scope and breadth with a mission to meet human needs without discrimination.

The Salvation Army can be traced back as early as the land run in Central Oklahoma. By 1892, Cleveland County had its first Corps, a Salvation Army church. In 1900 The Salvation Army put up its first permanent shelter, a large tent, to serve to the hungry and those in need of aid in Oklahoma City. As early as 1912, The Salvation Army placed red kettles on the street corners during Christmas.

Today, The Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma pursues its mission under the leadership of Captains Russell and Jamie Clay. We operate locations in Canadian, Cleveland, and Oklahoma Counties as well as providing aid to Logan and McClain counties. We operate two emergency shelters, three senior centers, two food pantries and food kitchens, as well as a Boys and Girls Club, and offer social services. These programs extend to every age group, demographic and race in the area.
