Camp Grandview Changes Lives

May 4, 2023

“In order to lead you must first learn how to follow.” This is just one of the things that Da’Shawn Catron says that he learned while attending The Salvation Army’s Camp Grandview. Camp Grandview is a traditional summer camp program providing the rich outdoor mountain experience in the context of a Christian community.

For at least one week out of the summer hundreds of boys and girls ages 7 to 16 from throughout Georgia pack their bags and head to Sharptop Mountain in scenic Jasper, Ga for an experience that most of them only get through their connection with the local Corps or through their membership with The Salvation Army’s Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Atlanta.

Da’Shawn was eight years old when he first attended Camp Grandview. That was the first time he had been away from home and was lucky to have an older brother and cousins to look to for guidance. After attending for a few years, he became someone other kids looked to for guidance, which led to him being chosen Boy Camper of the Year three times.

“Being away from the comfort of your parents for what seems like forever to a camper who has never experienced time away from their parents can be scary,” says Da’Shawn. “I prided myself on being the person who was always smiling and willing to lend a helping hand to those who needed it the most.”

Campers can participate in a broad range of activities, from athletics to arts to fishing and canoeing… and everything in between. Two of the activities Da’Shawn enjoyed the most were learning archery and swimming. He also credits attending Camp Grandview with learning to be a team player and building his leadership skills, which he feels has helped him become the person he is today.

Da’Shawn says that attending Camp Grandview can be life changing for a child. “I made lifelong friendships and memories, and I was able to explore nature, learn how to be a team player and be a leader. Most of all I learned how to be free.”
