INCLEMENT

Weather

There are two types of inclement weather alerts:

WATCHES:

A watch is a public notification that weather conditions exist that could lead to a warning.

WARNINGS:

A warning is an alert by the National Weather Service confirming an actual event that is occurring, giving time, location, speed, and direction of movement

When you know of a severe weather warning which may affect your unit/location please notify the your supervisor or officer in charge.

Each location should establish a safe area within the building to evacuate to in the event of inclement weather. That area should be on the lowest level of the building and away from external doors and windows. All TSA personnel and participants should be informed of where that area is. TSA personnel should be informed of the best, safest, and quickest route to take to get to the area. In the event of inclement weather (or during a drill), the two adults should walk their class/group to the area in a single file line with one adult leading and the other adult in the back of the line. Try to stay calm and think through your next steps. Elevators should not be used during an inclement weather situation.

Tornado Precautions

If there is a tornado warning, follow instructions and move quickly without questions to the designated safe area in the building which will likely be the center of the lowest level of the building, away from windows and external doors.  Lie flat and try to cover your head with something sturdy if possible.

IF OTHER SEVERE WEATHER IS IMMINENT (thunderstorm, etc.):

Remain calm. Do NOT exit the building.

Notify all persons in the building to quickly get away from the perimeter of the building and exterior glass, a stairwell or other internal room are good options. Lie flat and try to cover your head with something sturdy.

We recommend that severe weather drills are carried out throughout the year, especially in locations that are more susceptible to severe weather.

If necessary, after the emergency has ended and once it is safe to do so, please remember to follow the steps to report an incident, including completion of an Online Incident Report Form.
